Courtesy of The Associated Press, Tuesday, June 30, 2009

SAVANNAH — Death row inmate Troy Anthony Davis got another legal break Monday when the U.S. Supreme Court recessed for summer without acting on his latest appeal, likely delaying any developments in his case until fall. Earlier, his supporters presented Savannah’s district attorney with

Help Mr. Leonard Peltier get the parole he, and humanity, truly deserves, advocate and evoke :)
Leonard has carried a constant burden for all of humanity, for over 34 years straight, graciously, courageously, and with great generosity, and, besides thanking him, we have a responsibility to act, not just to right the wrongs of this world, to act to lessen Leonard's, and those like Leonard's, burdens; they've humbly born for us all. Thanx, again :)
Luckily, "we, the people..… Continue

Dear Supporter:

In less than one week, the San Francisco 8 - former Black Panthers and other activists - will have a preliminary hearing in San Francisco. They are being charged with the murder of a police officer in 1971. The charges are based on confessions extracted by torture, and it is clear that the indictments against these men are an attempt to rewrite the histor… Continue

Death Penalty Disgrace

Written by Bob Barr for the New York Times, May 31, 2009.

THERE is no abuse of government power more egregious than executing an innocent man. But that is exactly what may happen if the United States Supreme Court fails to intervene on behalf of Troy Davis.

Mr. Davis is facing execution for the 1989 murder of an off-duty police officer in Savannah, Ga., even though seven

Plot renews fears of radical Islam in U.S. prisons

The arrest of four Muslim ex-convicts in an alleged homegrown terror plot in the Bronx is renewing fears about the spread of Islamic extremism in the nation's prisons.

At least two of the four men suspected of plotting to bomb synagogues and shoot down military airplanes converted to Islam behind bars. The alleged mastermind is also a convert, and the fourth man identified himself as a Muslim when he entered prison.

But this week's foiled plot is not the first terror scheme implicating Muslim… Continue

Don't Let Georgia Execute an Innocent Man: Join the Global Day of Action for Troy Davis

Written by Ron Jacobs, for CounterPunch via Alternet, May 18, 2009.

One wonders how many times this scenario has played out in the United States. Like a classic crime movie, the details go something like this: A group of young men, usually African-American, get involved in an activity of questionable legality. A police officer (often off-duty) intervenes. Weapons are drawn by the officer and someone else. The officer ends

Prosecutors Block Access to DNA Testing for Inmates

In an age of advanced forensic science, the first step toward ending Kenneth Reed’s prolonged series of legal appeals should be simple and quick: a DNA test, for which he has offered to pay, on evidence from the 1991 rape of which he was convicted.

Louisiana, where Mr. Reed is in prison, is one of 46 states that have passed laws to enable inmates like him to get

State prisons shut off visits over flu worries

The Indiana Department of Correction has suspended visits to inmates so the swine flu virus isn't introduced into the confined prison environments.

Correction Department spokesman Doug Garrison says the no-visit policy went into effect Wednesday at all of its adult and juvenile prisons. He says the policy will be re-evaluated on a weekly basis.

Garrison says the suspension of visits is intended to protect the roughly 27,000 prisoners and 8,000 employees in t

Clean Slates for Youths Sentenced Fraudulently

The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania on Thursday ordered the slate cleaned for hundreds of youths who had been sentenced by a corrupt judge.

The young people had been sent to privately run detention centers from 2003 to 2008 as part of a judicial kickback scheme that shocked Pennsylvania and the nation. The judge in the cases, Mark A. Ciavarella Jr. of Luzerne County, is one of two who pleaded guilty last month to wire fraud and conspiracy for taking more than $2.6 million in

To Cut Costs, States Relax Prison Policies

CARSON CITY, Nev. — For nearly three decades, most states have dealt with lawbreakers in two ways: lock more of them up for longer periods, and build more prisons to hold them. Now many governments, out of money and buried under mounting prison costs, are reversing those policies and practices.

Some states, like Colorado and Kansas, are closing prisons. Others, l

America's Dehumanizing Prisons

Close Down Guantanamo?. What about our Own Hell-Holes? From Florida to California, America’s dehumanizing prisons confront President Obama and our governors with a challenge every bit as daunting as Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib.

In California, the state’s 33 adult prisons teem with nearly double the inmates they were designed to hold,” The New York Times reports. In Florida, officials say they must build 19 more prisons over the next five years.

In both states, advocacy

Supreme Court will consider convicts' rights to DNA tests

Reporting from Washington -- Since the advent of DNA testing, at least 232 prisoners have been freed after lab results showed they did not commit the crime that put them behind bars. But in some states, prisoners still have no right to test evidence that might exonerate them.
On Monday, the Supreme Court will be asked to rule for the first time that the constitutional guarantee of due process of law gives convicts -- as well as those who are presumed innocent -- the right t
